![]() Personally, I miss when Sonic was just Sonic, and Sonic could be in whatever style of game he wanted to be. I mean, as far as SEGA’s track record goes for understanding what people want, they’ve certainly been a lot farther from the mark before. ![]() To appeal to both audiences, we should continue to use both characters as often as possible.” And, okay. “Modern Sonic doesn’t appeal to Classic Sonic fans. But it’s looking like they took away something slightly different. When Mania was successful, I would have expected it to reinforce that same lesson. But still, after Sonic 4, they left behind the notion of a fully 2D Sonic game behind altogether until Mania all those years later. I would have expected SEGA to learn the lesson, “don’t mix 3D and 2D or people will get mad when you can’t replicate the physics,” but here we are with Frontiers still failing to shake away Modern Sonic in 2D. I wasn’t excited by the announcement of Sonic 4, but then I went and bought it day 1 anyways. I rolled my eyes at the phrase, “Classic-style 3D sidescroller.” But then I got to the trailer, and the moment Sonic phased into 3D, I was struck by the thought of, “wow, he’s so expressive and well animated.”Īs I’ve said many times around this site, I have a complicated history with 2D Sonic, and the whole “Classic Sonic” thing over the last decade has just made it even weirder. It’s a rollercoaster that includes elements of “you can’t be serious” and “wow, that actually looks really good.” I wish I could have been surprised by the trailer outright, but unfortunately, I saw the headline and news post first, and the trailer second. My gut reaction here is very hard to put into words. Except…they might actually be listening to the people they’re trying to appease this time? Let’s take a closer look at this. ![]() It appears that SEGA has once again come up with yet another ill-conceived attempt to appease “everyone,” seemingly ignoring lessons you would expect to have learned by now. Until next time, remember to live and learn every day! The title font looks like it’s based on the Sonic Colors logo, where you can see the horizon of a planet in the word “Sonic,” rather than the Sonic 3-inspired Generations logo? Why? Seriously though, who thought “Sonic x Shadow” anything was a good idea? I feel like someone’s going to lose their job over that…Īlso, I just noticed this. Still, we’ve yet to find a 2D Sonic game that can dethrone 3&K. I think I enjoyed it slightly more than Mania, purely for the sake of it being original. Storytelling was a glaring issue, level design was good enough, music was okay. It was good, but not spectacular, pretty much what I expected. Speaking of opinion pieces, I guess I skipped reviewing Sonic Superstars? Honestly, there wasn’t much to say. ![]() But Generations was quite possibly Shadow’s most egregious appearance in all of Sonic canon, so this is his shot at redemption, hopefully. Unless they handle his character horrifically, which is most of the time. I did buy a used Xbox 360 a few years back so I could replay the disc I already had, so that feels like a waste now… But anyways, I’m never going to complain about new Shadow content. In terms of the remaster in general…I’m not really sure why it’s necessary? I don’t have Generations on PC, but it’s still readily available with graphics that hold up perfectly fine today. That’s…all there really is to say right now. Plus, they each appear to come with a boss fight, which makes it almost like 4 levels? I was just really hoping, with the tease last night, that we’d get a full-sized “Shadow Era,” or whatever they wanted to call it, so 3 levels + 1 boss fight. On the other hand, Sonic Generations levels are actually long and good, and presumably these will be up that quality. Well, that’s not a sequence of words I ever thought I’d have to write…īut holy what how could they just drop this out of nowhere!? This is just like the announcement of Episode Shadow for Sonic Forces, except, like…better in every way?īlack Doom returns and does to reality as the Phantom Ruby rightfully should have done! The Biolizard gets a new form! Shadow gets Chaos Control and Chaos Spear in gameplay! And it all just looks freaking awesome!ĭownside: the video description mentions “2 new experiences,” presumably just the ARK and Westopolis, so even fewer levels than we got out of Episode Shadow.
